Music has always influenced culture. For generations, hip-hop and R&B have shaped how people dress, how they talk, and how they see themselves. As someone who grew up during the era of powerful women in hip-hop, I often think about how different things feel today compared to when I was coming up.

 

Artists like Lil' Kim, Foxy Brown, and Trina represented confidence, glamour, and power. They were bold, unapologetic, and influential. Many women from my generation admired their confidence and presence. They made you feel like you could walk into any room and be the baddest woman there.

 

But there was also a level of discretion in that era.

 

Back then you could be confident, sexy, and successful without putting every detail of your personal life on display. Women didn't feel pressure to tell the whole world how they made their money, who they were dealing with, or what happened in their private lives.

 

Today things feel different.

 

Social media and the evolution of music culture have made everything more public and more explicit. Sometimes the message younger women receive is that success comes from chasing money or depending on someone else for lifestyle and status.

 

My belief is that real power comes from independence.

 

It's okay to want nice things. It's okay to want a man who treats you well. But women should always be able to stand on their own two feet and build their own success.

 

Confidence is powerful.

Independence is powerful.

Self-respect is even more powerful.

 

And those are conversations we need to continue having with the next generation.
